The following are step-by-step instructions on configuring pop-up blockers in Internet Explorer for Windows.
To view these instructions in video form click here

1. Open Internet Explorer.

Step 1

2. Select "Tools" from the menu bar.

Step 2

3. Select "Internet Options..." from the drop down list.

Step 3

4. Select the "Privacy" tab.

Step 4

5. With the option "Block pop-ups" unchecked, Internet Explorer will never block pop-ups. However, it is recommended this be option checked. Note: With this option checked if there is a website you use that requires pop-ups you will have to add that site to the Allowed Sites list.

Step 5Step 5

6. Select "Settings".

Step 6

7. You can add a website to the allowed sites list by typing in the address in the "Address of web site to allow" field. In this example by typing "*.uconn.edu" we tell the pop-up blocker not to block pop-ups on any websites that end in .uconn.edu

Step 7

8. Select "Add".

Step 8

9. You can also set a filter level of "Low", "medium", or "High".

Step 9

10. "High" will block all pop-ups on all websites (this option is not recommended as it can make web browsing more cumbersome). When all pop-ups are blocked it can stop the functionality of some web based applications or sites, however, if you prefer this setting then pressing the "CTRL" key while browsing the site will tell the pop-up blocker to temporarily allow the pop-ups.

Step 10

11. "Low" will not block pop-ups from secure websites. This can be a good option, however, it is possible you may routinely use web sites that Internet Explorer may not consider 'secure', and therefore any necessary pop-ups on that page would be blocked.

Step 11

12. "Medium" will block pop-ups that open automatically. This is generally recommended as the best option. Most pop-ups that users find bothersome or annoying are automatic advertisements when browsing the Internet. By blocking only automatic pop-ups with the "Medium" setting, if you click on a link to launch an application, file, etc., if this requires a pop-up in a new window then it will open, and not be blocked by the pop-up blocker.

Step 12

13. Select the "Filter Level" that you prefer.

Step 13

14. Select "Close".

Step 14

15. Select "Apply".

Step 15

16. Select "OK".
